U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody won the Republican nomination in Florida’s U.S. Senate race, facing state lawmaker Angie Nixon as her Democratic opponent in November.
Nixon battled for the Democratic nomination to complete Marco Rubio’s term after he became President Donald Trump’s secretary of state last year.
Nixon scored an upset victory over retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council official who testified in Trump’s first impeachment case in 2019.
“Rep. Nixon ran a strong campaign,” Vindman posted on social media. “I will be standing by her side in the fight against Ashley Moody. I hope you’ll join me.”
Meanwhile, Moody, the appointee of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis currently holding the seat, appeared in a strong position as she sought the Republican nomination with President Donald Trump’s endorsement for the term’s final two years.
Moody was state attorney general in January 2025 when DeSantis appointed her to fill Rubio’s vacant U.S. Senate seat.
DeSantis, when he appointed her, praised her as a law-and-order prosecutor ready to help Trump “shut the border,” tame inflation, and overhaul a federal bureaucracy “run amok.”
In other state races:
— The Associated Press reported that Blaise Ingoglia won the Republican nomination for Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, while Annette Taddeo won the Democratic nomination.
— Wilton Simpson won the Republican primary for Agriculture Commissioner, while Joey Mendoza Atkins claimed victory in the Democratic primary.
