Gov. Ron DeSantis announced nearly $188 million in funding for health care programs in rural Florida, with the money going toward hospitals, clinics, workforce development and expanded access to medical services.
The funding includes more than 80 awards serving communities across 31 rural counties, which are home to nearly 1.2 million Floridians. Recipients include hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, rural health clinics, other health care providers and community organizations.
“These investments in rural Florida will strengthen hospitals and clinics, expand the rural health care workforce, and help ensure Floridians can access high-quality care in their own communities,” DeSantis said.
The awards are part of Florida’s Rural Health Transformation Program, which is administered by the Agency for Health Care Administration. Florida received $209 million through the federal-state initiative, which is designed to strengthen rural health systems, modernize infrastructure and increase access to services.
State officials said the latest awards follow funding distributed through procurements earlier this year to establish infrastructure for monitoring program results, tracking expenditures and supporting recipients. AHCA said it has now awarded the full scope of Florida’s funding under the program to qualified organizations.
The Northwest Region received the largest share of the latest funding, with 35 awardees receiving a combined $81 million. The Northeast Region received $51 million among 14 recipients, while 21 awardees in the Southwest Region received $45 million. Eleven recipients in the Southeast Region were awarded a combined $12 million.
Projects supported by the funding include new and expanded rural and satellite clinics, mobile health units, remote patient monitoring and advanced telehealth services. Funding will also support clinical training and rural rotations intended to increase the number of health care professionals working in underserved communities.
AHCA Secretary Shevaun Harris said recipients went through a competitive, merit-based review process and were required to demonstrate plans for putting the funding to use in their communities.
Senate President Ben Albritton said the awards represent the first year of a five-year initiative expected to invest more than $1 billion in rural health care. He said the funding builds on previous state efforts, including the Live Healthy initiative and Rural Renaissance legislation.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly said the investments could also have an economic impact by strengthening rural communities and creating opportunities for employers and workers. State officials said additional details, including individual recipients, award amounts and project descriptions, are available through Florida’s Rural Health Transformation Program.
